today was a very sad day on the farm.. not only for myself but my daughter and her hubby... we've always stated that this is sacred ground for God's creatures.. small and large.. unfortunately due to some very irresponsible 'farmer neighbours'' earth is minus one very beautiful creature... and it was especially sad because that beautiful creature's life was snuffed out here on the farm..... her crime - the death of sheep... sheep who's owners didn't put in the barn at night... negligence on the part of the owner as far as i'm concerned... not only did they 'murder' the cougar, they murdered the sheep who's lives were shortened because someone couldn't be bothered to make sure they were safe... unfortunately ms. cougar couldn't read the no trespassing sign, or read a manual that told her what she could and could not eat... i'm know there are plenty of people who would disagree with me.. you know 'sheep killer' etc., but when one puts dinner in front of them... hmmmmmmmm......
my daughter and son -in-law did a very valiant effort to save the cougar and i wish more than anything that they could have saved her... the 'conservation officer' stated he'd try to save the cougar, but we all know.. relocation doesn't happen often, rarely if ever.. for bears or cougars.... we asked how many cougars on the island.. he stated 400-600 animals... in my estimation that is getting down to the extinction wire... (our island is large..... Area: 31, 284 square kilometres (12,076 square miles). i have to say i'm ashamed to be human today...we as a group have raped, pillaged and destroyed everything in our path.....
anyways... R.I.P Ms Cougar
she's in the tree... look just above the centre of the picture and you'll see her hiding in branches...
after she was 'tranquilized', she fell into the creek below....
words can't express how i feel about seeing her lifeless body being dragged up the hill ...
From beasts we scorn as soulless,
In forest, field and den,
The cry goes up to witness
The soullessness of men.

This post made me cry. I feel your pain, I sincerely do. I have always felt that it is wrong when; animals have many times been wrongly or unjustly accused of heinous crimes and then pay the ultimate price, by being killed. SO many people do not want to take responsibility for their actions, instead they take the lazy way out and then look for someone (or something) to blame when things go wrong. I agree the farmer should have had his sheep secured in a barn or at the very least a paddock with a guard dog. Instead he took his chances, knowing there are cougars afoot, and when something bad happened, he blamed the cougar. Never once, I imagine, did it cross his own mind that maybe, just maybe he might be to blame. God's creatures...all of them, are magnificent, and should be respected, tolerated and given room to live. As long as we humans persist in living where the wild animals roam we will be consistently faced with issues such as these. If you don't want the wild animals visiting, don't live in their backyard! Poor poor cougar....may he R.I.P.
I am working my own brand of magic around here to stop the unnecessary killing of rattlesnakes.....I will persevere!
thank you for the very kind words.. my heart still breaks over her demise.. i wish you much much luck with the rattlesnakes, there's another creature that is much maligned, who's good outweighs the bad (if there is a bad).. and your so right "If you don't want the wild animals visiting, don't live in their backyard!"
While living in harmony with nature can often be quite compicated I do feel the same as you about such things. Unfortunately many others do not.
We know of a place where there are wolves, and try to hike in and sneak a few pictures of them every summer. I can't tell you how bad it made me feel when they opened that same area up for wolf hunting...so sad.
Wolf hunting, another disaster :( am sad to hear that... so many people view predators as evil things that should be eradicated but as we know, they keep the balance.... or should, if we didn't interfere...
Oh no...this post has brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe it. And that quote at the end, the soulessness of men...yes, we are the real terrors of this earth. The things we do are just unspeakable. I'm so, so sorry that this happened. I'll be thinking of that sweet cougar. She deserved better. They ALL deserve better.
thanks voracious vegan... we are a soulless bunch sometimes...it still bothers us here on the farm... the impact was great.. not something we'll forget soon ...
