Recycling at it's best.......

in my  world!!!  Some time ago i'd thrift store purchased what looked  to be two china cabinet tops, painted and used previously as bookshelves... and i was just waiting for something to put them on... my 'plan' came to fruition when some friends came to visit and brought a lower cabinet set which consists of 2 lower cabinet units and one countertop.... TADA!!!!!

my kitchen is very tiny but now functions much better.. i'll be doing a few more changes to make it more functional but hey... i'm LOVING it!!! i now have a storage space for my pressure canner and accessories, my other big 'not always in use' pots and other things which always were being shuffled around...

in the garden world... my 'recycled bakers rack has been helping in the food dept.....

arugula on the left half and basil on the right half... YAY!!!

this morning i went to let my dogs out when i went out on the deck... they were very much preoccupied with something on the ground... i went to see what it was... sadly it was a wee little nuthatch looking much like being on the verge of death... i'm suspecting it banged into the front window .... i picked it up and remembered what my son-in-law says... 'if keep the bird in an upright position, it has a much better chance of surviving'  ....  sooooooo ... i recycled an old nest which i'd found a couple of weeks ago... put it in a shallow container, my gloves and the nest on top... placed the poor little bird in the nest... and hoping for the best!!

update.... just checked on the nest... empty and the birds are all back feeding...
life is good.....

I wish we were neighbors, you are my kind of woman. Your cabinet is perfect and everything looks just so right. Glad about the bird . . . happiness is.
peace

I like the way you set up your kitchen, what a great way to store everything while making it look pleasing to the eye as well.

I found a way to make those paper pots without the neat little contraption that you have and might try them this year.:)

Too bad about the little bird, they fly into our windows sometimes as well...it sounds like it recovered though.

Well thanks Ruralrose.. i'm sure we'd make great neighbours... some of my neighbours could quite well be replaced ;) ... and thanks for the kudos on the kitchen Mr. H and Ruralrose... i must say i do love it... it seems the little nuthatch recovered, i've seen 2 at the feeder again... sooo ... Mr. H what did you do to make them without the wooden doweling??

I have not made the pots yet but hope to do so using these instructions -

By the way, we used some of your information to make dog biscuits the other day and Rowdy just loves them...thanks for the ideas.:)

Mr. H that was a good little tutorial.. the pots look to be quite a bit bigger than the ones i make.. i'm thinking you could probably use a small tomato paste size tin for multiples... re: biscuits- i've got a new recipe which the dogs seemed to all love even more... i need to type it out then i'll send u the recipe... there are a lot of different nutritional things in them... and every dog that has had them, begged for more ;)

I LOVE the cupboard... and the paper pots are pretty cool too... it seems like all the cool kids are making them this year :) I think I'm gonna have to give them a try :)

I love your cabinet! It looks so homey and beautiful with all your home canned goodies.

thanks it's me Mavis and Mobugs... i must say i love that cabinet too... those actually are dry goods in the jars... unfortunately i have a species of moth that insists on liking my flours, cereals etc., and sighhhhhh a mouse or 2 that have decided to 'visit'... so to keep said rascals out.. jars are the ticket.. the canned goodies are in my utility room, for now... i hope one day to have them in the kitchen, where they belong!! as for the mouse/mice.. they shall be banished soon... the live traps are coming out and any caught will have a one way ticket to further out in the country!!!

Hi, finally got back on here, saw how addicted I am to blogger when I couldn't get on. We are in zone 6b, we grow fruit and grapes. I miss tomatoes too and most greens since I only buy local produce, makes the garden all the more anticipated. Peace

wecome back Ruralrose..... mmm fruit and grapes!! i have a couple of grape vines i'm going to 'try' and encourage this year and a half dozen very small fruit trees that are struggling.. lack of water in the summer is creating havoc for them... 6b isn't too different from me i don't think.. we're higher up in elevation so more extreme than close to the water.. as for the tomatoes.. i seem to have found the ticket for growth.. reemay and my 'homemade greenhouse' combo.. just takes the chill and extends the season by a few weeks.. frostfree permitting!!
